On May 31, 2000, the College of Science announced the inaugural = recipient of=20 its Distinguished Teaching Award. Laurie Starkey, assistant professor of = chemistry was selected from a field of 18 nominees.
=E2=80=9CThe Selection Committee and the Dean were very pleased by = the high overall=20 quality of teaching the college, as evidenced by the excellent = nominations we=20 received,=E2=80=9D said Steve McCauley, chair, Distinguished Teaching = Award Selection=20 Committee. =E2=80=9CWe are delighted that we now have an opportunity for = an annual=20 celebration of teaching effectiveness, and we congratulate Laurie for = her=20 outstanding teaching.=E2=80=9D
Starkey is credited with providing an interesting and stimulating = educational=20 environment that recognizes the importance of motivation in student = learning.=20 She is an acknowledged leader in bringing advanced technology into = chemistry=20 classes, and has incorporated a new computer-based teaching program to = assist=20 students in learning infrared spectography. Starkey=E2=80=99s = fundraising efforts=20 resulted in the receipt of monies from the National Science Foundation = for the=20 purchase of new infrared spectrophotometers.
In addition to creating an innovative and interactive classroom = environment,=20 Starkey serves as faculty advisor for the undergraduate chemistry club. = As an=20 advisor, she has set up tutoring services through the club, attended and = organized meeting and events, and served as a role model for student=20 chemists.
=E2=80=9CAs a teacher, Dr. Starkey gives 110 per cent,=E2=80=9D wrote = former student=20 Charlotte DeBaere in her nominating letter. =E2=80=9CShe is not only = available for extra=20 help during office hours, but any time she is in the office. Her open = door=20 policy helps to convince students that she is one of those rare = professors who=20 truly care about their students=E2=80=99 success.=E2=80=9D
The Distinguished Teaching Award was created to recognize and reward = teaching=20 excellence in the College of Science. Faculty members are nominated by=20 colleagues, students, former students, and staff members.
